Universal Exercise Unit, aka "Spider Cage"The Universal Exercise Unit (UEU) is a specialized rehabilitation device that is used to assist patients in functional activities, vestibular and balance training along with strengthening exercises. The UEU is often referred to as the 'spider cage' due to the system of support bungee cords. It is primarily utilized in three ways: Anti-gravity upright support - The patient is suspended in the middle of the cage with unique support received through the elastic cords. This type of support is extremely dynamic and provides just the right amount of support needed. This allows the patient to perform any movement or functional skill practically independent. The type of exercises performed in full or partial weight bearing allows the patient to increase self-confidence and to develop a sense of security. They also facilitate the development and mastering of functional skills (sitting, crawling, standing, walking, climbing, jumping etc.). In this unique suspension, the patient practices different activities that help improve sensory integration. In many cases the patient can sit or stand unassisted by human hands for the first time. Gravity eliminating muscle isolation - A system of cables, weights and attachments is used to assist in a variety of exercises improving muscle strength, joint range of motion and overall flexibility. Gravity can be eliminated in the UEU to make the strengthening exercises possible even for patient with the very low muscle strength which cannot otherwise initiate the movement. If the patient can perform even a traceable movement with the active assistance of the therapist then he can progress to active resistive exercises. Vestibular sensory integration - By fully suspending the patient in the cage it is possible to most efficiently work on proprioception, vestibular stimulation and improve sensory integration dysfunction.
